‘The Rover’ Update – Shooting Schedule + Casting News

Posted by Mandy with No Comments

Press release from Porchlight Films and Lava Bear Films with updates about 'The Rover' (via comingsoon.net)
Porchlight Films and Lava Bear Films have announced that filming on The Rover started on Tuesday January 29. With support from Screen Australia, the South Australian Film Corporation and Screen NSW, the seven-week shoot will take place in South Australia.

Written and directed by David Michôd (Animal Kingdom, The Rover is a slow burn thriller, starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson ("The Twilight Saga").

Joining them are Scoot McNairy, who plays Pattinson’s brother, Susan Prior, Gillian Jones, Anthony Hayes and David Field. All have descended on regional South Australia for the hot and dusty shoot.

While donning the directorial hat, Michôd also wrote the script for The Rover based on a story he conceived with Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty). The film is set in the Australian desert, in a dangerous and damaged near future. Eric (Pearce) has left everything, everyone and every semblance of human kindness behind him when a gang of desperate criminals steals his last possession. Eric sets off on a ruthless mission to track them down, forced along the way to enlist the help of Rey (Pattinson), the naïve and injured junior member of the gang who was left behind in the chaos of the gang’s most recent robbery.

Liz Watts is producing for Porchlight Films and David Linde for Lava Bear Films. Watts and Porchlight Films produced Michôd’s debut feature Animal Kingdom. At the start of production, the producers commended the enthusiasm of the cast in their new environment.

“The South Australian desert environment can be a tough one to work in, particularly for those coming from a Northern Hemisphere winter but both the cast and crew have thrown themselves into the shoot. We are shooting in some of the most haunting and stunning landscapes in the world, and are fortunate to have such an exceptional cast and a truly talented crew,” Watts and Linde said.

FilmNation represents U.S. sales with UTA Independent Film Group. FilmNation also acquired the majority of worldwide sales rights to The Rover and the film has already been sold to leading distributors around the world - including Australia where distributor Roadshow Films’ Managing Director Joel Pearlman added “this is an incredibly exciting project which we are thrilled to be working on with Liz, David and the whole creative team.”

Shooting completes in mid-March in South Australia, with postproduction taking place in Sydney.

‘Maps to the Stars’ Update – Rachel Weisz Joins the Cast + Production Set to Start in May

Posted by with No Comments

From TheFilmStage

Breathe another sigh of relief, for David Cronenberg is assembling his next film. As was reported just when Cosmopolis had a world premiere, Canada’s best-known cinematic artist is making another endeavor with that film’s star, Robert Pattinson, and his newest favorite collaborator, Viggo Mortensen, on a Hollywood satire called Maps to the Stars. Already good, right? Well, there’s even more too add.

French site Allocine report that Rachel Weisz is now the cast’s third member — who, however, it has not been said — while a production start is being eyed for next May. Described as “very acerbic and satirical” by Cronenberg himself, Maps to the Stars, from what we understand, is a Bruce Wagner-scripted film which revolves around actors and agents, with a specific focus on “two child actors ruined by Hollywood’s depravity.” This central content, no matter if what we’ve heard is even true, has made this a difficult-to-implement project — movement actually began in early 2006, for instance — but when you get (for lack of a better term) stars in line, it can fall together. Respected producer Saïd Ben Saïd doesn’t hurt, either.

They’re good stars, too. Cronenberg has already shown an ability to coax wonderful and unexpected performances from Maps‘ male stars, while, on the other side of the gender coin, I think Weisz has already secured her own image. It’s still a little while off until cameras begin rolling here, but the news should be coming in on and off for the next six months. Tune in, because I think this has a chance of being something special.

Saïd Ben Saïd will be producing.

From The Playlist
Brewing since 2006, not much has really been known about David Cronenberg's "Map to the Stars." In May he described it as, "very extreme. It's not obviously a very big commercial movie, and even as an independent film it's difficult. 'Maps to the Stars' is completely different [from 'Cosmopolis'], but it's very acerbic and satirical, it's a hard sell." But Cronenberg has made a career out of mounting one "hard sell" picture after another, and thanks to three major stars on board, this one looks like it's getting made.

Allocine (via The Film Stage) reveals that Rachel Weisz has joined Robert Pattinson and the now-confirmed Viggo Mortensen in the upcoming film. Penned by Bruce Wagner, Cronenberg previously explained: "You could say it's a Hollywood film because the characters are agents, actors and managers, but it is not a satire like 'The Player.' Hollywood is a world that is seductive and repellent at the same time, and it is the combination of the two that makes it so potent. I won't fall back on some clichés or simplistic sloganeering, because the culture and what it reveals about Western culture and the rest of the world is very complex."

The movie, oddly enough, will be his first picture shot on U.S. soil, with the filmmaker revealing earlier this year that it will lens in Los Angeles. No word yet on the roles the trio will play, but this one appears to be moving along nicely. Plans are underway for production to begin in May all on a budget of $15 million.

It will be interesting to see how the methodical Mortensen and young upstart Pattinson work together, and Weisz is always a treat. As usual with Cronenberg, we're curious to see what he brings to the big screen next.

Jude Law Joins Rob and Naomi Watts in ‘Queen of Desert’ + Production Details

Posted by with No Comments

He'll star opposite Naomi Watts and Robert Pattinson in the biopic of Gertrude Bell, described as the female Lawrence of Arabia.

Adding another title to its arsenal, Sierra/Affinity will represent foreign rights to Werner Herzog's historical Gertrude Bell biopic Queen of the Desert.

Judd Law is joining the cast of the film, which headlines Naomi Watts as Bell and Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence, otherwise known as Lawrence of Arabia.

Bell -- like Lawrence -- was an explorer, writer, archeologist and attaché for the British Empire, who is credited with helping to catalyze the formation of the Middle East at the dawn of the 20th century. She's often been referred to as the "female" Lawrence of Arabia.

Nick Raslan is producing via his Palmyra Films banner along with Cassian Elwes and Michael Benaroya. Benaroya's Benaroya Pictures banner will finance the film.
Sierra/Affinity will handle international sales and will make it available to buyers during this year's American Film Market.

"It is a great opportunity to be working with such acclaimed talent on such an important project. We look forward to seeing Werner Herzog make this exciting piece of history come alive for a global audience," Sierra/Affinity CEO Nick Meyer said.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in Morocco in March 2013.

Benaroya Pictures' credits include The Words, Lawless and Margin Call

Law was most recently in theaters with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, as well as Hugo, 360, Hugo and Contagion. He's represented by Julian Belfrange Associates and WME.

New Project! Rob to star in Hold On To Me with Carey Mulligan

Posted by with No Comments

From Deadline
As packages firm up for AFM, here’s one that will surely reverberate in Santa Monica. Robert Pattinson is signing on to star with Carey Mulligan in Hold On To Me. The film will be directed by James Marsh, who won an Oscar for the docu Man On Wire and followed with Project Nim.

Pic is based on a true story about a femme fatale who with her boyfriend kidnaps and ransoms the town’s richest man. They bury him in a box and things go horribly awry. Pattinson plays the flashy supporting role of the woman’s life love, Jimmy, who isn’t involved in the crime. The project was scripted by Brad Ingelsby.

Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales, Mark Roybal and Michael Pruss are producing with Alexandra Milchan. Also producing is Todd Field, who originally developed the film to direct, but stepped off to helm Creed of Violence for Cross Creek.

Pattinson adds this to an early 2013 schedule that will have him starring opposite Guy Pearce in the David Michod-directed The Rover, and he is also starring in Mission Blacklist, the true story of the U.S. military interrogator responsible for discovering the location of Saddam Hussein in the hunt for the fallen leader. He is repped by WME and 3 Arts.

From The Playlist
Pattinson will join Carey Mulligan in the previously announced "Nancy And Danny" which is now called "Hold On To Me." But this isn't some swoony romance. Pennedy by Brad Ingelsby ("Out Of The Furnace"), and set to be directed by James Marsh ("Project Nim," "Shadow Dancer") the story follows a money hungry woman, whose life didn't turn out the way she wanted, who uses a man as a pawn to help land her high school crush in a get-rich-quick scheme. And that plan is to bury the town's richest man in box and hold him for ransom, but of course, things don't go as their supposed to.

The film also brings Pattinson into the orbit of another great filmmaker, Todd Field, who is producing the project after being originally attached to direct (he's now focusing on "The Creed Of Violence"). Now before anyone gets too excited, this is a package project headed to the American Film Market which means if it doesn't get some decent pre-sales, it ain't gonna happen. But Pattinson is clearly done with blockbusters for the moment, and we like everyone involved, and given the talent on board, we don't see why this can't make a planned 2013 shoot.

From The Wrap
Robert Pattinson may sink his fangs into "Hold On to Me," his manager told TheWrap.

The "Twilight" hunk is in talks to play Carey Mulligan's lover in the romantic drama, directed by James Marsh, who made the Oscar-winning documentary "Man on Wire." (according to eOnline's article just published, his rep confirmed he signed on to star in the movie)

In the film, Pattinson would play a character named Jimmy who is manipulated by the money-hungry social-climber portrayed by Mulligan. She hatches a plot to kidnap and bury the town's richest man. Suffice to say, things don't go as planned on the way to easy street.

Pattinson has become a teenage sex symbol thanks to his role as the brooding vampire in "Twilight," but he has shown an eagerness to avoid being typecast as Byronic objects of lust in an array of roles in indie films like David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis"(2012).

On deck for Pattinson are "The Rover," a futuristic western opposite Guy Pearce, and "Queen of the Desert," a historical drama that will find him playing T.E. Lawrence for Werner Herzog, the idiosyncratic director behind "Fitzcarraldo."

He will also stick on the pointy teeth once more in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2," which will start inducing mass-swooning among preadolescent girls on Nov. 16.
